Anora and The Brutalist Lead the Pack London Film Critics’ Award Nominations

By Rebecca Brando x The Big Magazine

The Palme d’Or winner Anora and the indie drama The Brutalist lead the nominations for the London Critics’ Circle film awards, each securing seven nominations.

Both films are anticipated to be strong contenders throughout the awards season in the coming months and have largely paralleled each other here. Anora and The Brutalist are nominated for film of the year and director of the year (Sean Baker for Anora and Brady Corbet for The Brutalist), with their lead actors also receiving nominations: Mikey Madison for actress of the year for Anora and Adrien Brody for The Brutalist. Madison, portraying a sex worker who impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch, is also nominated for breakthrough performer.

Close behind, with six nominations each, are the papal drama Conclave and the feminist body horror The Substance. Conclave, featuring Ralph Fiennes as a British cardinal participating in the election of a new pope, has earned nominations for actor of the year for Fiennes and screenwriter of the year for Peter Straughan, who adapted Robert Harris’s novel. In a significant comeback, Demi Moore is nominated for actress of the year for The Substance, while its creator, Coralie Fargeat, is recognized in both the writing and directing categories. Emilia Pérez, the trans gangster musical directed by Jacques Audiard and already being touted as a major Oscar contender, has five nominations, including film of the year and foreign-language film of the year.

Conclave leads the British/Irish films in terms of nominations; following it, each with four nominations, are Mike Leigh’s newest drama, Hard Truths, and the Belfast-based rap comedy Kneecap. Marianne Jean-Baptiste, the star of Hard Truths, is nominated for actress of the year and British/Irish performer of the year (the latter for her “body of work”, including her role in The Book of Clarence). Meanwhile, Kneecap is poised for a successful awards season, having emerged as the leading contender for the British independent film awards (Bifas) and making the shortlist for the best international feature film Oscar.

The winners of the Critics’ Circle awards will be revealed on 2 February during a ceremony in London.
