"Anora" maintains its awards momentum by winning both the PGA and DGA, positioning itself as the leader for the coveted Best Picture award at the 2025 Oscars next month.

Both awards ceremonies took place on Saturday (February 8, 2025), the same night just a few blocks away from each other: the Directors Guild of America Awards at the Beverly Hilton and the Producers Guild of America Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel.

The DGA's top prize, Outstanding Theatrical Feature Film, went to director Sean Baker for “Anora,” nudging out fellow nominees Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”), Edward Berger (“Conclave”), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”), and James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”).

“My impostor syndrome is skyrocketing right now, as well as my cortisol levels,” Baker said during his DGA acceptance speech.

At the PGA Awards ceremony, "Anora" received the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures

"Anora" premiered on May 21, 2024, at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and was released theatrically on October 18 by Neon. Produced on a $6 million budget, the film has become Sean Baker's highest-grossing film.

The film's unrivaled and prestigious run now places it as a strong contender to win Best Picture at the 97th Academy Awards, surpassing "Emilia Pérez," the French-produced, Spanish-language musical soap opera about a Mexican cartel boss who transitions into a woman. The film's momentum and recognition in the awards circuit were impacted after its star, Karla Sofía Gascón, faced backlash. This occurred when Canadian journalist Sarah Hagi shared screenshots of offensive posts Gascón wrote in Spanish, containing derogatory comments about Islam, Muslims, and George Floyd.

Gascón issued an apology on her now-deleted X account but later expressed during an interview with CNN en Español, “I have been judged, sacrificed, crucified, and stoned without a trial and without the opportunity to defend myself.”

Next up is the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the last major ceremony before the Oscars, will stream live globally on Netflix Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall.

Oscar balloting begins Tuesday and runs through Feb. 18.
