Bloomingdale’s has announced that it will close its flagship location on Tuesday in San Francisco’s largest mall, marking the end of nearly two decades in the heart of the city.

The department store chain cited the closure was a result of the shifting retail landscape and evolving strategies for its future operations and slated to close at the end of March.

Luxury retailer, Michael Kors also announced this week that it closed its store at the struggling San Francisco Centre, around half of shops are now empty. The store occupies 330,000 square feet and considered the mall’s largest remaining tenant.

'We've loved sharing the best with you at Michael Kors San Francisco' a sign on the store's Market Street door read on Tuesday. Customers were directed to shop Kors Santa Clara location.

The trend of major retailers exiting the mall has been happening for years, with Adidas and American Eagle shutting down their stores in January and May of last year, respectively. Other high-profile departures include Nordstrom, L’Occitane, Sephora, J. Crew, Hollister, and the Lego Store.

Macy’s, which owns Bloomingdale’s, announced it plans to shutter its 400,000-square-foot flagship store complex that fronts Union Square Plaza as part of a sweeping effort to close 150 “underproductive” stores across the country through 2026.

Last year, when Macy's revealed its intended closure, the retailer stated it would concentrate on growing its luxury brands by launching 15 Bloomingdale's locations and 30 new Bluemercury beauty chain stores, both of which have been top performers in its portfolio.

Although the center still is a home for a few brands like Rolex and Aritzia, it seems to have suffered from an increase in crime and smash and grab robberies in the city's downtown area.
