The Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón is reportedly set to attend this Sunday’s Oscars after controversy over bigoted social media posts on X (formerly Twitter).

The Spanish actor, nominated for best actress, was taken off the campaign trail by Netflix following a backlash over resurfaced controversial tweets.
According to Variety, the Netflix will pay for Gascón’s expenses including travel to Los Angeles for the ceremony.
Gascón is the first openly transgender actor to receive an Oscar nomination and has been a notable presence on the awards circuit, frequently seen at events and ceremonies after the musical Emilia Pérez rose to Oscar nominee fame.
But at the end of January, her tweets resurfaced expressing many hateful POV's in the past towards people of color, Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars. The film’s director, Jacques Audiard, called her tweets “inexcusable”.
Gascón issued several statements and participated in an hour-long interview on CNN, which she reportedly handled independently of Netflix. “Being part of a marginalized community, I am very familiar with this suffering, and I sincerely apologize to those I have hurt,” she stated.
She issued a final statement on Instagram to express her apologies again to all her fans and co-stars on Emilia Pérez. She also mentioned that she would refrain from further commenting on the controversy, expressing her hope that her “silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is”.
Gascón was notably absent from the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, and the recent Screen Actors Guild Awards, despite being nominated for Best Actress at each of these events.
Allegedly, Netflix excluded her from several promotional campaigns and cut her out of recent For Your Consideration campaign materials.
It is unclear if she will walk the red carpet at The 97th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
