By Becca Brando x The Big Magazine

More than 2,000 structures have burned and at least 130,000 residents are under evacuation orders since January 7, 2025. The fires range in size and number from Pacific Palisades Brush fire, Eaton fire, Hurst fire, and the Sunset fire.

As of January 9th, the Pacific Palisades Brush Fire remains uncontained at 0%, having burned more than 17,000 acres and approaching the Topanga Canyon area. The destruction of the Eaton fire includes five fatalities and thousands of destroyed structures. The combined fire damage is projected to be the most expensive wildfire disaster in American history due to the significant wildfire crisis in Los Angeles County.

Local residents are facing severe air pollution and power outages. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has issued a boil-water notice due to possible contamination and urged Santa Monica and Pasadena residents to conserve water.

As Los Angeles is officially in a state of emergency, numerous film and television productions have paused. Several awards shows and nomination announcements have been delayed or canceled, impacting voting bodies, nominees, and workers due to the fires.

Late Wednesday night, “Hacks” star Jean Smart took to Instagram with a plea to television networks in the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires to “seriously consider” not airing any award shows.

Smart urged “any of the networks televising the upcoming awards” to cancel their ceremony broadcasts, and to consider “donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters.”

Many fans went straight to the comments section of Smart's Instagram post with replies both is support of the awards ceremonies and broadcasts given that they employ hundreds of below-the-line workers, and in support of not airing the celebrity packed awards shows.

While Smart did not call out any specific award shows, multiple ceremonies have already adjusted their schedules in response to the devastating wildfires.
