The music icon, aged 73, confirmed in the new documentary from Drumeo Phil Collins: Drummer First, released on December 18, that he is no longer able to play the drums.

“I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock,” he admitted.

Filmed in late 2022, the documentary covers Collins' lifelong love of music, including his decision to give up performing. Collins shared that he received his first drum as a gift when he was only 3 years old as a Christmas present. He said he took to it "instinctively." As he grew older, he continued playing, and he spent decades recording and touring after joining Genesis in 1970. As time went on, the physical strain of playing turned out to be too much.

"The drumming has taken a toll on my hands, legs," he admitted.

After five decades of drumming with Genesis in concerts and on solo tours since the '80s, his hands and legs have been impacted to such an extent that he had to retire from drumming in March 2022 following his final performance with the band.

“Musicians, people in bands in general had this thought that they were invincible,” his son Nic Collins explained.

“I think that’s really what it is with my dad is just this kind of sense of you’re a drummer, you’re invincible, you do what you do. But you don’t know it’s gonna take a toll in the long run.”

Phil became the drummer for Genesis in 1970. The band paused their activities in 2000 but came back together in 2006. His final performance with the group occurred in March 2022, with Nic performing alongside him and his daughter Lily Collins watching from the audience.
