Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and US President Donald Trump declared that the US will halt tariffs on Mexico for a month, as earlier reported by Bloomberg. Sheinbaum mentioned that the parties “had a good conversation” leading to agreements on border security and arms trafficking.
“Mexico will promptly strengthen the northern border with 10,000 National Guard members to stop drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, especially fentanyl,” Sheinbaum stated in a post on X. She mentioned that the US is “dedicated to efforts to stop the smuggling of high-powered weapons into Mexico.”
Trump said on Truth Social, “We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico.”
There’s no word so far on the status of the planned tariffs announced against Canada and China, which similarly cited fentanyl distribution.
