On Thursday, Investigation Discovery (ID) released the trailer for "Who is Luigi Mangione?", a new documentary set to explore the psyche of Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old who is accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The documentary combines insights from those close with Mangione, integrating expert commentary, digital records, and personal stories, alongside perspectives from a criminologist, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, to investigate the elements that could have led to the murder.
The one-hour special will explore Mangione’s online activities, including his social media posts and Reddit discussions. Mangione, an Ivy League graduate from Maryland, was arrested on December 9, charged with the shooting and murder of 50-year-old Thompson, a father of two, in Midtown Manhattan on December 4.
"The special aims to unpack Mangione's background and track his trajectory to understand what led him to land behind bars," ID's synopsis reads.
On Tuesday, Federal Judge Katherine Parker ruled that Avraham Markowitz, a specialist in capital cases, will examine Mangione's federal case.
One of his federal charges, murder through use of a firearm, is eligible for the death penalty. A spokesperson for his attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo told ABC News she is 'pleased' to have Markowitz join the case.
Mangione is presently incarcerated at the Metropolitan Center in Brooklyn, New York. He has entered a plea of not guilty to the 11 charges in his indictment, which include first-degree murder and murder as an act of terrorism.
The doc premieres Monday, Feb. 17, on ID and will stream on Max.
